"Then the woman who was the real mother of the living child, and who loved him very much, cried out, “Oh no, my lord! Give her the child—please do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “All right, he will be neither yours nor mine; divide him between us!” Then the king said, “Do not kill the child, but give him to the woman who wants him to live, for she is his mother!”"
~ 1 Kings 3:26-27 NIV~

In 1 Kings 3:16-28, the story of two new mothers is used to illustrate King Solomon's new God-given wisdom. But, as we see, after one mother accidentally smothers her newborn and exchanges him in the night for the other mother's living son, the King threatens to resolve the custody battle by slicing the living infant in two. Only then, is it evident who the real mother is because she, in loud protests, concedes the child to the other woman.
What is evident from so bold a gesture as to give up one's child to save its life is much more than just the extraordinary surrender we observe on the surface. I believe this is also a story of light versus dark.
In 1 John 1:5 (NLT) we're reminded that, "This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all." But, what we also know is that God is love. 1 John 4:16 (NLT) tells us, "We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in His love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them."

God equips mothers with an amazing arsenal of tools to cover every life situation; love, courage, strength, patience, forgiveness, and understanding are powerful traits that every mother will use to nurture and raise her child. When a mother's deepest love for her child rules over all else, every other quality will naturally develop from it, casting light over darkness. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul reminds them, "Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." 1 Corinthians 13:6-7 (NLT)
In the world today, there will be dark corners at every turn and evil will seek to injure and destroy. The mother who puts her trust in the Lord, His light, and His love, declares her willingness to surrender her child into God's care.

Father God,
We thank You for Your light. Darkness threatens to surround us every day but, the light of Your Love envelops each of us as we navigate through challenging times, tough decisions, or difficult relationships. We thank You God, for the way that Your love grows and manifests itself in us in so many other attributes. Kindness, patience, forgiveness, compassion, strength, and courage, rooted in love, all flourish and spread to blanket those around us. We praise You Father, and thank You, that Your divine Love will cast light onto our darkest path, showing and guiding us safely as we go.
All these things we pray, in Jesus' Name,
Amen
