I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?

My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber;

indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD watches over you— the LORD is your shade at your right hand;

the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;

the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Psalm 121:1-8 NIV

𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙥! 𝙄'𝙫𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣...

Chances are anyone can finish that well known phrase made famous in a television advertisement.  The little button, worn on a chain around one's neck would bring immediate rescue to the wearer. A stumble and fall rendering us immobile would be met with swift rescue just by activating the lifeline of that little button.

We are all humans and, as humans we're bound to stumble and fall in sin.

Recently, a social media acquaintance called me out for behavior that was unkind; I had let my emotions get the best of me.  I was both horrified to think that a comment I had made betrayed Jesus' teaching and my own principles.  I lost several nights' sleep over it.  I was heartbroken to think I had let God down with my behaviour. Certainly, I had stumbled and fallen.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to live "against the grain", rejecting the world of the flesh even if we face opposition, exclusion, or ridicule.  In Acts 15, Paul and Barnabas penned a letter to new Gentile believers in Antioch explaining that in their new Christian life, it would be necessary for them to abstain from practices that were acceptable to the wider Roman community and by doing so, turn their entire focus to the Lord Jesus instead. (Acts 15:22-29)

Letting our guard down, for even just a moment, can lead to a severe fall.  Temptation is everywhere and in a moment of weakness the enemy will grab hold.  A social media post, a boastful comment, a fabrication of truth will cause us to stumble.  The enemy is always lurking; trying to trip us up.

As a result of that situation, I reached out to God in repentance and remorse, asking for forgiveness.  Recalling the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach often is enough to remind me to stay connected with Him.  Through deep and sincere prayer we will always find the light that leads us back to the right path.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." ~Philippians 4:6 NIV~

It's times like these that we need to press the "help" button and activate the lifeline to the Lord.  With God we CAN get up!

"The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure." ~1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT~

PAWS TO PRAY

Father God,

Temptation lurks around us. At every corner, the enemy is always eager and ready to trip us up. We pray, Father, that we find strength to resist; to recognize the danger and fight against our enemy. Lord, help us to keep our focus squarely on You so that we are continually clothed in the armour of Your protection. Should we stumble Father, we thank you for your endless mercy and grace and give thanks for Your forgiveness.

In Jesus' most Holy name we pray,

Amen
